View Full Version : A lot of funy names appearing as new members

I have noticed that many new TNG members are joining with funny names. These new users however dont post anything that I am aware of.
Are these users actualy TN RPers or just random people dropping in creating their user names and never appearing again?
It would be really bad if we suddenly get an influx of non RP D00ds who would likely turn these forums into a Trailer Park just like the official forums making the job of the mods a lot harder.
Perhaps we should check these names and see if they are in fact active TN RPers or just random people showing up. Possibly the best way to do this is to see if after a certain amount of time they post something vaguely related to RP.
((My board, which uses the same software as TNG, was getting a bunch of random signups too, with 'website' addresses that led to advertising and such. I had to change the registration process to the 'harder' version, which makes you type in some numbers and letters that a person can read, but a machine cannot. That stopped it. Mortica may have to do that here also (note that visually handicapped people will require help registering if you do this).

yep..that's been nipped in the bud and everyone who doesn't have a "last IP" has been deleted from the database.
People will have to type in a visual code to register now.
Bastard spammers.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but since when are non-roleplayers banned from registering here? They're good enough to roll a character on the server, why are they not good enough to come here? I'll be the first to declare that I hate the public boards and the insipid drivel that congests them, but that doesn't change the fact that it's their right to post as they choose within the Terms.
What if a person is a roleplayer 20% of the time, and a generic PvPer 80% of the time? Are such people not welcome here?

bah..that didn't work...They are still registering remotely somehow. I'm gonna have to update the code tomorrow *sigh*.

I think it's taken care of now.
I'm updating a bunch of code on the site today, so if things get flaky, that's why.

I went to this site/forums with the implication through site design and content that this served the RPing community of Twisted Nether. It was also under my assumtion, through various posts, that the reason for this seperate community from the official forums was that the official forums had been "hijacked" from non-RPers.
RPing 20%, as you said before, shouldn't be a problem. I would have a problem with 0% RPers. This community site really has no purpose for them.
If they contibute regularly, even if 0% RP, then I have no problem. In the example of Brakogar, I think that is both rude and unacceptable.
The only loophole I can see is where it says on the front page "This site is dedicated to everyone who plays on the World of Warcraft server Twisting Nether."
I would like to argue, however, that social rules are still expected to be upheld, even if not written down. There is no written rule, for example, that one must bow in the presence of the Pope or Dali Lama. It has become customary to, and rude not to. You don't have to, and it isn't enforced, but you will recieve a social sentence if you fail to. The same could be said here. It isn't written that this site is for the RP'ers of Twisted Nether, but it is implied and upheld socially. Someone coming in and disrupting the flow is against the social rules.

just to nip this before it goes any farther...
Everyone is welcome to check the site out. If you know people who play on TN who don't RP, please direct them to the site and let them see what they are missing!!!
Heck, if you have IRL friends who don't play WoW, direct them to the site and let them see what they are missing too!
This being a private fansite, we have 100% control over what can be posted. Any attempt at griefing this community will be squashed immediately.
I'm a firm believer in giving people the benefit of the doubt.

Not strictly talking to Pahana, so if something I say seems non-applicable to her words, it's for precisely that reason.
This isn't a matter of social niceties such as bowing. This is a matter of saying that a demographic of people is not welcome here. Let's be honest here. Has every member of this site posted in-character in Nether Legends? As the only strictly non-OOC board, should we compile a list of all members who have yet to roleplay in that board and ban them, regardless of their character, intelligence, personality, etc?
This community site has no purpose for non-roleplayers? If that's the case, then this community site does not reflect the community.
In any case, I'm going to let this go now, as I'm sure Mortica doesn't want to have to end up locking this thread.

Ill say my last piece as well. Personally, I hate when someone gets a word in and then tries to stop all further conversation.
That isn't the problem that people are worried about, Daala. People can join and not RP. The problem is when they post in RP's with the intent to grief (as in the example earlier), or try to insult and harrass the ones who do RP.
Lurking is fine, or even contructive criticism in the Game-related sections. If they wish to talk non-RP topics, there is a seperate section for that.
It is rude for anyone to harrass anyone RPing, and it is unfair if someone or some people have to deal with it.

Strange....I made this thread with the purpose of bringing the funny names to Mortica's and the Mod's attention, that is why it is in the website suggestion section.
The thread accomplished it's goal but it seems to have turned into some kind of discussion / Argument.
Since the purpose of the Suggestions section is not really to hold these types of discussions I will not mind if Mortica or one of the Mods moves the thread to a more appropriate place if such discussions continue.
