Rassafrassa...so I'm trying to write about stuff that happened fifty years ago and am running headlong into brick walls concerning, well, how cohesive the Tauren were back then. I know Thunder Bluff wasn't around, but what about Bloodhoof Village? The page on wowwiki indicates that Bloodhoof is pretty new as well. It doesn't seem like they permanently settled in Mulgore until after the Orcs came, which was much more recent than fifty years ago.
Also, the Grimtotem page on wowwiki states that the Grimtotem clan name has been around for a long time, but their cohesiveness as an organization just started a few years ago as well. Were they as isolated from other Tauren before Magatha came into power as they are now?
Gah...HATE BLIZZARD. More Tauren lore! *burns something in protest*

I think that before they settled in Mulgore, since they were nomads, the tribes had contact with eachother but werent neccisarilly together when they travelled. I'm sure they were a lot more friendly, and probably had weeks allotted where they got together and traded before moving on.

If you can't find it, pick how you want the thing to be and insist you are correct until proven otherwise! :D
Then if things change, use an alternate universe or bring out the retcon hammer. /flex
I may be giving bad advice, but I blame the detail lazy, story changing lore peoples at Blizz. If they can do it, so can you.

Yeah, that's pretty much what the other Tauren-players are doing - making the whole damn thing up. Not that I have a problem with that, but I'm just trying to make sure I'm not saying anything that's antithesis to any official lore (har-dee-har har) that may be out there.

The tauren originated in Desolace, until the centaur drove them out. They settled in the Southern Barrens, until the orcs arrived and they joined together to fight against the centaur. Like has been said, they were nomads, and none of the permanent settlements existed, but the same grounds were probably constantly used if they returned to the area.
The tribes themselves didn't stay together, and often spread out to other areas of Kalimdor. The Grimtotem mostly kept themselves in Thousand Needles, the Mistrunner in Feralas, etc.

Most of the permanent settlements, if not all, are recent. Bloodhoof was definitely not around back then.

The ancestral tribal lands of the Tauren run from the mountains of Stonetalon, through the Desolace, the Feralas, and into the Shimmering Flats. The Barrens and Mulgore were known to them, but reserved as grazing lands.
The Tauren people are inherently nomadic, and thus rarely were they skilled warriors, at least not to the ability to hunt. They were ill-prepared for the Centaur Wars when the Five Tribes descended upon them in Desolace. This could be said that a deep betrayal was done unto them by the Night Elves, whom simply turned their back on the Tauren plight.
50 years ago is half the age of Cairne. This would be 20 years even before the Dark Portal opened. I would surmise that this time would be where either the Wars started or when they turned against the favor of the Tauren. Either point would be significant in war against the Centaur and the Tauren beind slaughtered to extinction, exiling themselves from their homes, only to have their enemy viciously chase them.
