I'm planning on making a troll here on this majestic server, but before I name him, does anybody know anything about troll pronunciation?
The one I really want to know about is the ai sound.
Does it make a more oriental "igh" sound, like Shanghai?
Or does it make a more "ay" sound, like Rain?
I've tried googling it and I've come up with nothing. =\
So, does anybody have any idea at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and will be rewarded with a happy smiley like this: :D
See how happy he is?! Happy! and think about it... He could be yours. Your very own happy smiley that has so signifigance whatsoever besides to prove my gratitude towards you for attempting to help me with my predicament.

I always pronounced it in the oriental fashion, like Shanghai.

:D for Evanthe. Thank you, I was hoping that somebody would say that, because thats how I see it too.

I always pronounced it in the oriental fashion, like Shanghai.
That's how I've always read it as well.

Honestly, I have 4 trolls:
Ya'Utja
Cuchumaquiq
Xibalba
Xultun
As you can see, three of them are all Mayan names, and pronounced in a Mayan tongue. The other I just changed where the apostrophe is in the word, but he was my Hunter, so it's all good.
Since their religion and architecture is so centered on Carib and Early Central American civilization, I safely based their names on the linguistics of those peoples.
Now if only I knew more about North Native American Societies, I could probably play a Tauren better. Arapaho Runetotem will have to suffice.

That's actually a really good source to base the naming for trolls, and it also gives me help by searching the names on google. That was very helpful, Raziel.
:D for Raziel.
Oh, and from my point of view, Tauren seem to share the characteristics of the plains indians of the midwest, and maybe also the southwest indians, like the Apache.
I don't know if this helps, but if you were looking for Tauren names you could look for sources based on those. The Native Americans were well spread out, so the languages between the North-Eastern Indians (such as the Mohawk) and the South-Easern / Plains Indians would differ quite a bit. =\
Just a thought, though.

My own tauren is based on the Pipil Native Americans of Central America. Why? 'cuz I felt like it.
Take that, Blizzard!

:D for Ninorra, I guess.
Well... Trying to make out good Mayan names from using sources from google is harder than I thought. They're all weird, and don't sound as fun as Raziel's examples.
*sigh* I guess Troll naming is just a gift that I don't possess.

My troll is named Niethan, or Muir if you want his actual name and not an alias.
Muir is by no means Mayan, or even close to it. But it means 'ocean', so I like it.
My advice; name as you see fit. If you want an actual name with a meaning, try www.behindthename.com --it lists the neames of all different cultures and the eyntomological roots and meanings of them.

I have two trolls named Khiskiva (sand troll) and Vhakti (darkspear).
I just.. liked 'em.

Khiskiva sounds familiar. Like I've heard it somewhere.
I'm also starting to think of bagging this whole Troll idea and rolling Ally. They seem like they need more roleplayers over there. =\

They do, but they don't have Trolls. And trolls are awesome.

But they have Squid-Goats...
and the Dwarves. Dwarves and Squid-Goats are Asum too!

But not so much as Trolls.

Trolls: Voodoo and Maui Wowie
Dwarves: Beer and Fighting
Matter of preference, but I stand by Dwarves.

(While rping in goldshire)
Duerrak: "Yeah and if he tries any of that armor transformation crap on me, I'll stoneform and dropkick him through the window"
Dwarves = Win

Trolls lost their "cool" when Blizzard took out their "I kill two dwarves in da' mornin'" saying.
Night Elves still have bouncie-bouncie, so they are still the lamest.

Trolls will always be awesome, because they have such a variety to them, no other race in the game (I think) has as many different clans and off shoots and just all around badassery as the trolls. Plus Zabrajin is totally an Ewok village, how can you not want to play a race that builds tree houses?

I'm loving Bajinaji, my little troll shaman... She is, I do believe, the proud possessor of the foulest MRP/FlagRSP description on the server. :D
On the subject of names for Tauren, if anyone wants indigenous names I may be able to help, as I speak some Nahuatl, some Hawaiian and a little Halkomelem (http://www.ydli.org/langs/halkomelem.htm), with the following caveats.
1. Long vowels are distinctive in Hawaiian and Nahuatl, so if you wanna be super exact, you'll need a way to type an accent (technically, the accent used in both languages is a macron, the "long mark" in dictionaries, a horizontal line over the letter, but any accent used consistently will do).
2. Halkomelem has a lot of letters that include the apostrophe, so that might not be the best choice; e.g stl'itl'qulh "child" or Lhq'e'nuts "Vancouver BC."
Yes, I am a geek.

Mostly for naming I just start rolling sounds around in my mouth until I find something passable. Or I've also bastardized an NPC name. "Sulajin" "For Zul'jin!"
I think my favorite was "Mencahe" (Men ka HEY), who was a Tauren huntress.
