TNG could benefit greatly from a Shoutbox.
We have one on the First Legion forums (http://dark-heroes.net/forum/index.php) and it seems to curtail the endless thread derailments and savage ADD that seize people.
Thanks!

I'll ask for myself and the few others that may be around and are inexperienced with forum terminology.
What exactly is a "shoutbox"?

Well it's not quite a mop, and it's not quite a puppet, but oh man when they get together...
*laughs*
So to answer your question I don't know.

Thank you Homer, but I wasn't asking what a muppet is.

Go to the FL Forums and scroll near the bottom of the page, there's a section where you can input short messages that post to a box above it...
Sort of like a public Chat Room.

Every forum I frequent that added a shoutbox eventually saw about ten posts per day outside of the shoutbox.
It is also nearly impossible to keep it moderated.
I am anti-shoutbox for TNG.

Well Shoutbox would be more for people to post the "chit chat" that turns threads with 6 posts of substance into 9 page sprawling monsters that start out as a discussion, but become a chat room.
How many threads do people choose not to read because there's already so much there and they don't feel like wading through 5 pages to see where the discussion begins versus the derailing posts?
Also a Shoutbox works as a GREAT pressure release because the nonsense that would be hard to moderate vanishes after just a few dozen replies, not letting it get out of hand or have a possibility of being dragged up again later!

We have the technology.
I'll think about it. However, since we don't have a "front page" per se, not sure where it would go.

It's a suggestion, not an opinion! So, I'll keep my opinion to myself.
I am always for things that will minimize the most retarded shit people put. I personally *hate* things that have no sort of nutritional value - and are typed out in d00d speak. People who realistically type d00d speak to be anything other than funny and/or to put the point across of the situation (telling somebody to lrn2, just because that kind of puts the point across of it being so common you *have* to type something as retarded as lrn2) makes me want to choke them through their monitors for intentionally butchering their own intelligence. Need to put something out fast? Then kk away.
... if you are on a board and have more than enough time to put our your thoughts, then write it! WRITE IT!!!!
...
Kaldore moderates the shoutbox. For this I will agree.

Now I do think Malebrignon has a valid point too, and I've not had quite the experience he has had with the Shoutbox... Do you think that it wouldn't happen that way here since this is a decent sized community?

Could the chatroom be used for this purpose? Or is it too big and bulky for what you were thinking of, Kaldore?

Silvermoon University has a shoutbox, as instituted by our own Coach Dewce (aka the IT troll). It's a fine addition to the site, but due to the fact that it basically forces the page to constantly refresh, it'll catch the attention of your job's IT department pretty quickly if they're looking for evidence of employees pissing away company time.
Not that I would ever do such a thing, of course.

I promise you, whether by accident or on purpose, people like Tillna and myself will probably make you all hate the shoutbox.

I like them especially if you have to be logged in, but yes... they need heavy moderation sometimes. People love griefing shoutboxes. So Kaldore gets to mod a chat room! Lucky guy!
Yeah, I'm against the shoutbox for the same reason. I think the chat room fulfills that purpose beautifully, except it doesn't get enough advertisement. Maybe a link on the top navigation bar would be in order.
