(( This morning.. At about 4 am Server... )))
Tears stung her eyes and the Sin'Dorei woman hit the ground running as she materialized near the portal globe, uncaring of the strange looks directed her way by the honour guard , fleeing down the carpeted ramp and into the city.
Despite her blurred vision and aching lungs Kovae didnt slow untill she left the city gates, where she paused, gulping the clean night air of the forest gratefully before heading purposefully up the winding road that would lead to her favoured place of refuge.
It didnt take her long to reach her destination, leaving the path and following the bluffs untill she could look out upon the lone tree standing on the almost unseen spit of land at the tip of the bay.
A soft rustling of leaves heard on the pre-dawn breeze beckoned invitingly and with a soft sigh of relief the heartsick woman started forward, only to be brought up short at the waters edge.
The bay was still, and a glance was enough to tell her that the dark waters would be positively icy. The small woman hated swimming under the best of conditions, and it didnt take her long to make a decsion, shaking her head and heading back up the bank. Like so many times before, she would come down over the cliff, more effort, but worth staying dry.
Moving carefully, the shadowmancer cursed inwardly, wishing fervently that she had taken time to stop and change from her light sandals and simple skirt into something a little more suited for rock-climbing in the dark.
Almost as if her thoughts had been a herald, she felt the thin sole of her left foot slide abruptly sideways as it found a treachorous patch of small gravel in the dark, sending her sliding and bouncing down the cliff face, slight outcrops sending her laterally across the rock untill she was far from her chosen path before her frantic hands found purchase, stopping her fall just as her legs and feet found nothing but open air.
A deep breath, and then another, her own hearbeat a deafening roar in her ears as the small elf took stock of her situation.
Nothing was broken, the throbbing in her fingetips told of at least one lost fingernail, probably more. Counting herself lucky Kovae tried shifting her weight upward, only to discover there was nowhere to go, her her forearms and hands resting on the barest of ledges, a sheer face of granite just inches from her abraded nose in the grey predawn light.
Closing her eyes there was another slow deep breath as a rising panic was carefully controlled and the slim woman tried easing her weight to one side.
If.. she ..could.. just.. reach .. her .. pouch. The small glowing stone within would send her safely to her Mother's quarters in Shattarah City. It would be awkward at best but...
A miniscule slip and a split second of weightlessness filled her with a fresh surge of terror, making it clear any movement at all was liable to send her hurtling into empty space.
Oh Light, Eladis is going to kill me.
The thought caught her offguard, and twisted abit as pang of sorrow washed over her heart, last words coming back to haunt her with viscious clarity. " Stay.. I need you... We need you, just as you are, ... dont abandon us" The feeling of his hand cupped over the gentle swell in her abdomen seared into memory.
Oh Ela.. if only..
How she wished he was here now. Tears welled up unbidden once more in her gritty eyes, and despair loosened her grip on the granite surface, only a faint slip jarring her back to the present.
STOP THAT!!
Grabbing herself mentally by the scruff of the neck the woman shook off her despair, forcibley wrenching her thoughts in the direction of rescue as the sky lightened, shades of peach, rose and gold tinting the horizon at her back.
Kovan will come..
Kovan, her twin. Her thoughts dwelled there, abraded face forming a soft smile despite the pain as she imagined his worried face peering over the rocks above. A simple word and she would be encased in light, free to let go and fall harmlessly to the base of the cliff like so many times in the past when fate found her too far up the wrong tree, just one ledge too many in the ruins. He was always there to catch her. He would come.
The sun rose without fanfare, the first rays striking her trembling muscles, providing welcome relief to the aching cold that made the deep burn of holding her position almost unbearable.
The sounds of waking shorebirds met her ears, thier loney cries coming on the wind and it struck her: Were she allready below, it would have been one of those rare mornings you etch in your memory with golden luminecence. Soft breezes rolling off of a sea so blue it makes a soul ache just to look upon it while the world wakes up around you.
Voices. The sound of voices on that selfsame breeze broke her reverie and she called out, hope shooting through her as the sound came closer, cheerfull chattering in thier liquid native tongue.
" Oh gods HERE!!! DOWN HERE!!"
Kovae cried out again, sickeningly aware of how dishearteningly thin the sound was, as the sounds of laughing discussion continued above her, followed by the sounds of picks on rock.
Bloody ore hunters...
Her tired voice rang out once more, a voice hoarse after a night of crying, and it went unheard, the sounds of rescue fadeing away in the distance.
The sun's gentle rays became a punishing force, the rock beneath her her swollen and throbbing hands heating, forcing her to shift constantly in discomfort, the burn in her neck and shoulders becoming all encompassing.
Oh Ela..
Her last thoughts were tinged with regret as overtaxed muscles gave way and there was a soft cry on the wind, followed by a pause that was much.. much to long before a sickening crunch, overlayed with the sound of an overripe melon splitting open echoed up the cliffs.
A soft 'pit pit pat' of liquid hitting rock could be heard for a time, before that too, grew quiet and all that was left were the sound of shorebirds upon the breeze in a perfect morning by the sea.
