View Full Version : Discrepancies with Roleplay

More often than not, I'm seeing posts listed as roleplay, while in reality they are just stories. No character interaction, except if it is taken from in-game events. I'm used to text roleplaying, long posts between several people on one subject.

What I'm asking for is, when it comes to forum-based roleplay, I'd like to see more interaction with people that aren't able to be on at certain times, so that roleplay can be carried on without time constraints.

Feel free to start an Open RP thread. I'd like to see more interactive ones also. Just put (Open RP) at the end of the title, and you should find a few people willing to build a story with ya.

I've seen some people go gonzo with 20 different categories for their forums, and I've found that tends to dilute the posts, and also intimidate newbies who might not know which one to post in.

But if people are interested, I could break out another RP forum strictly for interactive RP.

I'd love to see this actually work and be productive. It seems like every "Open RP" thread I've ever read was basically someone throwing a picnic or other silly social event where all folks do is exchange pleasantries. Hmmm.... That gives me an idea.

Well, I post stories under Journal (since that is what they are). I like to see continuity between RP threads and in game events. An example would be that if I join the open RP Malebrignon made just now, I don't think that anything hashed out in the thread should need rehashing in game.

This method could provide a way to RP the gathering of a raid, or the forming of a group, the merging of guilds, etc. Example: If someone wants to start a group to visit Sunken Temple tonight, they could start an open RP, interact on the forums, then go to the temple later when everyone can log in.

My problem is that Im not so great with Freeform RP. I know how to nail down a personality, and be that personality, but my imagination isnt so hot when it comes to making up plotlines and NPCs and drawing others into it. It is really silly because I can run a game of Dungeons and Dragons without a problem, but freeform RP tends to lock me up.

In each game I've played, the Rp forums will have both story RP posts and Open-RP posts. Some boards will even have two RP areas, one for each.

Both RP is valid, imho. If you want to see more Open-RP threads, by all means, start one up. :D

Personally Im not really comfortable with forum RP, I can post bios and such but when it comes to real RP...well I play a game with graphics instead of another purely text based RPG for a reason, I like to be able to see my character do the action and such. A lot easier for me to get immersed that way...doesnt mean you cant have your open RP though :)

Well... they are roleplay stories. So, no lies there.

BUT, I do understand what you are saying. I've done text RP (Prodigy Classic and AOL) since 96, and the curt and undescriptive RP of this MMORPG has been a little hard to get used to.

Heh, I've had times where I was tapping away some big description before, and get jumped by either a mob or an alliance. Of course, stupid me can't send out something unprepared... so I'm stuck trying to delete what I was saying so I can go about using hotkeys to save my butt.

Alas! Maybe I will be able to help do some open RP, though I'm not too sure. Any interact with Alliance will go into violence. Any interactio with Horde will probably... err, get into violence. Abric isn't a very approachable guy, unless you have something he wants.

I'm with Soraxis on this one. I like reading the RP stories groups of people put together, but I haven't ever participated. First off, I'm not much of a writer and second is I play the game to RP and get immersed. Maybe I'm more of a visual person. /shrug

If you want a thread for it, go for it! I will lurk there like a champ!

You hit it right on the button I think, I know for a fact Im a very visual learner, meaning when I learn in school or whatever I learn best when theres a graph or something written on the board etc. I can still learn through other methods (listening, writing) but the visual stuff is my strength. Thats probably why some people can RP on forums easily and some cant...the guys who do are most likely the same people who can learn by writing stuff down, the guys who cant are the visual guys and the auditory...they're the grey area :)
