Psychological Profile
Internal Struggle: There are two forces within Sylennis that vie for control over her soul. One is a fairly normal personality, while the other is a "beast" of anger and resentment that can cause her to act against her sensibilities when provoked. (Note that this goes a bit beyond just being quick to anger. She may often lose control of herself completely for more than just a few moments.) In recent years, Sylennis has learned to harness the 'power' of the beast without actually succumbing to its influences, and it has made her a force to be reckoned with. However, other recent events have shattered her confidence, and her control over this 'beast' is not nearly as strong as she lets on.
Trust Issues: Syl is distrustful by nature due to the circumstances of her life. Trust is a very difficult thing for her. To date she has trusted only a handful of people enough to share her past with them, and only one enough to reveal the true extent of her internal struggle with the beast.
History: ((Or: More RP Cliches Than You Can Shake a Stick At))
Origins: Syl’s actual age is unknown, since her early past has only been recently recovered in fragments of memory. Her family was cast out of kaldorei society when it was discovered that they had been practicing magic in secret. The ship hit a storm enroute to the eastern kingdoms and all aboard were assumed lost. She was found adrift amongst the ship's wreckage by a group of elven sailors from Quel’thalas about 150 years ago with no memory of her life beforehand. (In recent years, she has recovered most of this memory which has left her a little distrusting of the kaldorei as a whole - though there are individuals she likes.)
Quel’thalas: The elves took her back to Quel'thalas where she was raised as a high elf. She was taller than the others, and a few of her features were a little exotic, but otherwise her rather pale features helped her to blend in with her Quel'dorei cousins. If they were aware of her true ancestry as Kaldorei (which they probably were), they never told her.
Her stay with the elves was fairly brief; only about 20 years or so. She was a warm, innocent and fun-loving individual and got on well with most people. She never developed a large affinity for magic or sorcery, however, and often felt like an outsider. She soon left for the human lands to see if she would fit in better elsewhere.
Azeroth: Her travels took her as far as the kingdom of Azeroth before her funds and provisions ran out. That was where things started to go wrong. She never seemed to be able to make a career or purpose for herself. Most of her life was spent on the streets, dealing with dangerous individuals and often getting herself into serious trouble. This lifestyle led her to discover how good she was at killing; a discovery that was extremely trying on the elf’s already fragile mind. She wrestled with her conscience every time she had to take a life and wept for her lost parents and her shame at what she, their child, had become. But the killing got easier and easier, though there was always a twinge of regret and a longing to be something her parents could be proud of.
This life continued until the orc invasion.
The Scarring: When the humans were forced to flee Azeroth for the northern kingdom of Lordaeron, Syl did not manage to make the escape with them. The orcs overran Azeroth and Sylennis was taken prisoner by the Blackrock Clan. For what seemed an eternity she was brutally beaten, tortured, raped and abused by the orcs. After this had gone on for a few weeks, she had simply given up - resigned herself to an existence of humiliation and pain as a toy of the Blackrocks.
The last vestiges of her innocence were completely wiped away.
After six months of unending pain and torment, fate granted her a chance to escape and she took it, fleeing north to refuge in Lordaeron. Nearly her entire body was scarred and disfigured. Her left arm was broken in thirteen places - shattered, really - and numerous other broken and misshapenly healed bones could be found throughout her entire body. It took four priests to restore her skeletal structure and return her arm to a usable condition. Her full physical recovery took three years and she still feels a phantom pain in her arm whenever something reminds her of her experience.
She has never told anyone the true extent of what happened to her or dealt with these memories in any way. She is embarrassed by the scars and ashamed of both the things she was forced to do and the fact that she gave up and resigned herself to pain and humiliation. She always wears long pants and sleeves in public to hide the scars that she is too ashamed to display.
The Beast: After her physical recovery, Syl quickly fell into the same lifestyle she had led before the orc invasion - only now, she reveled in the death she wrought. She lived for the thrill of the kill and often sought out work as an assassin. Any remaining vestiges of her innocence were gone, replaced by a dark beast of rage that thirsted for vengeance and violence everywhere it turned. What she did during the time the “beast” was in control, she can only faintly remember and she hesitates to think about the things she did in her thirst for blood. In the midst of this bloodthirst came the betrayal of Arthas and the coming of the Legion. Syl barely noticed, simply moving her operations farther south to escape the thickest of the fighting.
The Turnaround: When Stormwind was rebuilt following the war, Sylennis was hired by an unknown party to assassinate a noble within the city. Unfortunately, word of the hit reached the ears of SI:7 and Mathias Shaw. They intercepted Syl and attempted to arrest her.
Noting her remarkable affinity for dirty work, Shaw offered her a choice: be imprisoned in the stockades, or work for SI:7. Wasn’t really much of a choice at all... Syl worked for SI:7 for two years and during that time, she learned to gain a bit more control over the violent instincts that now burned inside her soul. Unfortunately though, the control was not absolute and soon the beast within her made a mistake that SI:7 couldn’t cover up. She was interrupted during an operation by a drunken noble and had killed him in a fit of rage. Rather than remain and face discovery, arrest and execution, she fled.
With nowhere to go, she traveled east to Kalimdor, in an attempt to get to know the people and culture she had never expected even existed until hearing of their joining the Alliance. Unfortunately, her hopes to finally find the place where she fit were quickly dashed. The druidic society of the Kaldorei was completely alien to her, and she often found her anger and violent tendencies to be an obstacle in getting to know her people. In one last attempt to make a connection, she traveled out into the wilderness of the Un’Goro crater to do work for the Cenarion Circle. It was doing this work in quiet and solitude that finally brought her some mental peace for the first time since her capture by the Blackrocks. The beast still dwelled within her, but now she was its master and it did not control her.
