There's gotta be something I can do to save what's left of poor Kiros 2.0. He's come down with something absolutely WICKED and even my mom's Kiros 1.0 is giving up the ghost. Let me tell you how nasty this shit is:

It completely borked SuperANTISPYWARE, which I swear by. I mean the damn program just DOESN'T run. Ever.

Maybe some tech-savvy people can figure out wtf is going on (go figure that my computer decides to go bottom up when I stop playing WoW for a bit).

HAVE SOME SCREENIES OF WHAT I GO THROUGH.

This is what happens when I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Hell, this happens whenever I start any program whatsoever:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/fauxfaia/wtfhelp.jpg

Which is followed by this after I click on 'cancel' about eight times:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/fauxfaia/wtfhelp2.jpg

Then, my internet's been hijacked! Look carefully at what happens when I click/highlight a link:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/fauxfaia/wtfhelp3.jpg

That leads to pop-ups, pop-unders, and all sorts of nastiness:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/fauxfaia/wtfhelp4.jpg

Also, my System Restore? Wiped. Completely. Nothing. Nada. Fuckers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/fauxfaia/wtfhelp5.jpg

So I know I got some sort of super virus/trojan rape going on here. I need something that will get rid of it. HALP.

I AM ALSO REALLY FUCKING TIRED OF SEEING THESE DAMN ADS TO INCREASE MY (nonexistant) PENIS SIZE. FUCK YOU, VIMAX. YOU FOLLOW ME ON EVERY GODDAMN WEBSITE.

I just want to save him. :( I'm saving up for a new computer, but in the meanwhile I NEED KIROS 2.0 TO HANG ON.

Do you still have your original discs for your OS and shit? Just wipe it and reinstall everything. That's what I did when my PC would get bogged down.

Lythas

Nope, my computer didn't come with all of that. It was just preloaded and crap.

Also, before I wipe ANYTHING, I need to get an external hard drive and copy my documents folder. I have way too much stuff that I cannot afford to delete from my computer..

see if you can use this, it's free and pretty decent from what I remember:

Ok, Remember a while back when my wife managed to infect three computers? It was this... only two things can save your computer. Buying there software (the point of the virus, DO NOT DO THIS) Or, a reformat.

Another option is to get a cheap hard drive, install the OS on this drive, and boot your old primary as a secondary to get the files you need off of it, then reformat it.

And, for some irony, when I went to open this thread I got a Wow-tng data base error....

Yeah, you're pretty much humped. You can either go the hard route of attempting to use every antivirus utility known to mankind in safe mode to remove/identify the virus(es) (identification can actually be useful because there are many specific removal tools for viruses). This has worked for me once. Or you're going to need to format.

If this is the same one that I had infecting my computers, it disables safe boot. All you have is bios, other then that, it completely locks you out of everything.

You need to get what documents you have to have off the pc and to a disk, any disc. And you need to make absolutely damn sure nothing else goes off with it. Then you need to format, the end.

You have no other reasonable solution. Frankly I think you should consider doing a gut check on just how required those documents are in fact. It is possible there is some form of propagation set up as well and it will send itself along in anything you copy.

Look up Avast and Spybot, download and run them.

If stuff on your computer is taking you to sites offering to search for viruses and crap... close them and don't click on anything. They're tricks as the programs that they have you run just put more crap on your computer aimed at keylogging everything you type.

It's too late for that. This malware prevents the installation of those programs. I've had it. The only fix is buying there software, and then running the above programs, or a fresh system installation.

Even if you boot from CD with a rescue disk?

What will happen then is it will put all the current files in a "safe" place, and boot. First time she is on, and attempts to get any form of antivirius (which i do STRONGLY suggest avast, get it now!) the virius will start looking and infecting again. Not 100% but very likely.

EDIT:: Spoke with my super nerd Asian friend, there ARE virus's that still can overwrite the ability to boot cleanly using a system restore disk.

What I really think she needs to do.

Boot machine in current state,
Find files that matter, put onto removable mediea
Reformat machine
Install Avast and Spybot
Insert removable media and peform an avast scan of the disk before copying files to the computer.

Then Kiros 2.0 will be back and breathing.

I'm going to give her a bit of help first, see if we cant CLEAN THE MACHINE.

If not, I have a solution to that too!

Mwahaha.

I can't see the pics here at work, and I didn't think to check this thread at home, so I'm replying solely to the text I see here. Apologize for potential redundancy from images.
There are viruses out there designed to encrypt any document type (.doc, xls, .pdf, .txt, etc.) and will only provide you with the decryption string if you send them money.
I've yet to come across any myself, but they're out there. I've also yet to encounter any that can circumvent safe mode, but that's not saying they don't exist.

If you have the install media, nine point five times out of ten it is easier to just reinstall the operating system for badly infected systems. You could also (hope to) find someone with a clean system that can be wiped out without losing anything, attach your hard drive to it as a slave drive (or using one of those nifty USB hard drive bays), copy off what you need to that machine, do scans of what you copied (making sure / hoping nothing there is infected as well), and then wiping the drive and starting from scratch. This way you don't have to worry about copying files from a bad system which is running (as I would not be surprised if an infected TSR could also infect files being copied), only an infected hard drive which isn't being used for booting.

A good idea in general is to get an external hard drive to put all your awesomeness on, like you mentioned. Or even a regular hard drive to shove into a slot inside your computer. Computers are finicky and prone to wtfx viruses and the sorts. It's a pain in the ass to do at first, but in the long run (like if you got another virus) you'll be all set and know what you need to do.

I don't trust any anti-virus soft wear, so if I see my computer doing something wrong you bet I'm reinstalling windows.

Maithanet
05-12-2009, 01:25 PM
Ultimately it depends what anti-virus you're using. I tested mine recently (While I know mine is good, it never hurts to check) by downloading a .rar file I knew was infected to see if it'd spot it. It did, so I was happy.

*repeats what Akuje Agnarr and Vaaldis said*

All good advice, all worth doing. Dont be a chump kids, now you know and knowing is half the battle!

GI JOE!

PS: The other half is giving up the ghost and doing the format/reinstall.

The virus stops any downloads, right? What it doesnt stop is file transfer and installation. Therefore, someone else downloads a powerful antivirus (In this case we used NOD32 found here (http://www.eset.co.uk/)) and file transfers it across.

We discovered you can't run a basic system sweep as there will be enough virus' installed to reinstall them back in on start-up but once you do a full clean (At least, I'm assuming it was only one) it'll pick them all up and you'll be good to go again.

I don't recommend trying this method with Norton. Norton is generally (NOTE THE GENERALLY) bad.

Surfing for those naughty bits is most likely what infected your PC. Sorry I missed this while it was vital, just some more advice, never use ie. Use Firefox & you'll get way less infections. Also I didn't see anyone mention AVG Free its an excellent anti virus program, the government uses the paid version on their servers. I personally use AVG Free, Spybot & registry repair & it's keep this PC running fine for 5 years.

NECROING FOR LEGITIMATE REASONS

My graphics card is dying on me. This makes me a sad panda. I thought updating the drivers would help but apparently my card is too old and outdated to BE updated anymore. I'm calling myself saving for a new computer period, but I am getting sick and tired of having to restart my computer a gazillion times. SHould I just bite the bullet and get a new card, or just tough it out?

Rand_Shea
10-14-2009, 02:24 PM
What type of card will you be getting?

If it's AGP then don't bother looking. There aren't that many of that kind being made anymore.

A 512 PCI or PCI-E shouldn't cost you that much.

Gorvena
10-14-2009, 02:28 PM
Get a new card. No need to max out if you are saving for a new computer, so you can get by with a card that is "out of date" by a couple of tech generations (iow, six weeks approx... XD) and spend a reasonable ammount. Just make sure that you replace chipset for chipset (ATI for ATI or NVIDIA for NVIDIA) and that your power supply has enough juice for the new card.

If you need help, let me (or one of the other geek types here) know.

Karkarov
10-14-2009, 03:50 PM
If you are getting a new pc just tough it out and get the new card with the new pc. If you want to hold off for awhile just get a budget card. You can get cards for 60 dollars these days that can eat WoW, chew it up, and then spit it back out no problem.

Assuming its not one of the plethora of cards their programmers can't work out, or bother to fix, compatibility problems with.

Gorvena
10-15-2009, 10:26 AM
If you stick with a reputable manufacturer like ASUS or MSI you'll be fine, but again, replace chipset-for-chipset. If your current card is ATI, replace it with an ATI, or the same for NVIDIA. I know this from personal experience.

Awright. Once more reviving this thread.

I've decided that I'm just going to have to get a new graphics card; I heard that constantly taxing the one I'm running off now (which is old as water), is just begging for it to go down and take my motherboard with it. Until I get a new computer, I'll have to make due with what I got.

I had been looking at a few of them here and there, and while I'm certain KIROS has what it takes for an upgrade, I just need to figure out how I can determine what my current power supply is. I'm no good when I comes to fooling around with hardware.

While I'm replacing the graphics card, I'm going to add some more memory while I'm at it...
