Group for Darkon, LFM

So as a few of you know, I participate in a "Beat the crap out of fellow students with large foam-coated rods" club, affectionately called Epic Battle Club at [Virginia] Tech. It's grown pretty large and being the unofficial Smith of the group have fallen into a leadership position. We've decided to continue the club next year, and a few folks are discussing things over the summer, since most of us live in good ol' VA. So we've decided to start participating in Darkon (there was a thread a year or two back about it).

If any of you are interested in heading up there (Maryland/Northern Virginia) let me know and we can get together. The first one we will be able to attend is May 24th, and we're hoping to send at least a few folk to each event over the summer, initially fighting with Ched Nasad (have a friend who is acquaintances with them) with hopes of eventually forming our own (Hokie) nation.

Yeah, thats actually why I picked Darkon over Dargohicantspell it. It focuses more on combat and the sport aspect of it than the actual RP. I also enjoy building things, but it will always be a hobby for me.

Besides, I couldn't argue "Full Plate Armor" as a necessary expense in life.

Sadly, I was working all weekend till the wee hours of 11pm, otherwise I would have.

Oh, and I'm not saying you can't hit foam bats in a LARP, I'm just saying that that's what the VT club I helped found is. Foam bats minus the RP, so...LAFBC? (Live-action foam bat combat?)

You must make yourself available May 24th. We're hoping to go then, and hopefully the campout June 5th-7th, though this falls on Burine's birthday so I might not be able to attend. I'll let you know for sure which ones we're attending as time draws near, probably won't have any definite answer until after exams, but check the schedule at www.darkon.org and let me know what times are good for you.

How heavy are these foam weapons? I fight a friend of mine with wooden bokken and have so far broken two fingers because of it. (I evened the score, trust me.)

Still at it, though, unless these foam things satisfy closeness to weight of actual weapons. If so, I'd love to know how to make em. My friend wears an umpire chest thing and a lacrosse helmet, and I got my bomber jacket every now and then, but wood still hurts.

They're pretty well padded, we've only had one serious injury at Tech where the padding on a bowstaff slipped and knocked two teeth out of one guy's mouth. I've taken blows to the face and balls and not been hurt. Maybe some slight bruising if you go up against some asshole who doesn't know what he's doing.

I think I'd be nigh unstoppable with foam, knowing I couldn't actually hospitalize someone with it unless I put some serious effort into doing so. Buuut, I live in California, so no joining you. Plus I believe I'm taking part in a beer pong tornament of champions that day. ($100 prize is MINE).

I do it to, Emmons, but only with my friends. No one else around to really do it with in the Bay Area. It sux big time, I really enjoy doing it. The only people I can beat on run away when I try to duel them.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IT IS NOT LARPING. LARPing is "Live action Role Play". How is an interest in learning swordfighting in a safe environment for your actual self LARPing? SCA uses rattan, not foam. LARPers have lightning bolts, too. Stop being stupid and calling things what they are not.
