So I've been hunting for several years, but finally broke down and bought a Slate Call for turkeys... now heres my question if you don't mind. Has anyone who's used these calls seen them actually bring Turkeys to you or does it just make noise

I've only ever used box calls since they have a higher volume and are simpler than many other calls.

Slate calls, I think, are more quiet and are designed for putts, clucks, and purrs. They would probably work better when the bird is nearby.

I haven't been turkey hunting in about five years, so I'm a little rusty.

My dad has one of the wooden ones, but we've never seen it work yet.

I'm guessing that's a box call. Does it have chalk on it? If not, then that may be the problem. That, or you just can't rub two pieces of wood together correctly. =P

Yes, it's got chalk. XP

Well, now we know what the problem is. ;)

I have nothing worthwhile to say, I just wanted to put out there that I think this is the awesomest TNG thread ever.

I stole my uncles and hid under my brothers bed in the middle of the night and made really loud turkey calls and scared the hell out of him.

I got in trouble a lot. :(

Never been turkey hunting, but we do have wild turkeys here up in the mountains a bit

My dad has about 619 different turkey calls. The only one he ever uses is a box call with paper towel crumpled up in it to take the 'edge' off of the gobble/cluck/whatever turkeys make.

thats only like...maybe .01 worth of contribution.

turkeys purr?

Not like a cat, it sounds more like the coo of a dove.

Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Laz2ST0Dkso) showing a hen clucking and purring.

My perception of you is forever changed by this thread, Ignas.

For the better, mind you.
