To be succinct, when this woman stepped out on stage I'm sure everyone expected her to be a lot like William Hung. She opens her mouth and this voice comes out that no one would believe was hers until she belts out this song. I almost cried. You can look at the judges faces and see as they're all blown away.

That really is amazing. I hope she goes somewhere and I hope she doesn't get all sorts of surgery when she makes her money.

I love it when talent overcomes all. This is further proof that you don't need to look like a bimbo to have a beautiful voice.
Also, I love this song.

I hope she wins. I think she's adorable. :)
Though... fame and fortune ruin everyone who manage to get it. I'd hate to see her as another has-been that dies in a puddle of her own filth after ODing on some form of narcotic.

She gave me chills. Her voice is ridiculously amazing it's almost inhuman. Love love love! I don't think she'll end up getting surgery or taking drugs. She's adorable.

the fat guy who sang opera was better.
This is just slightly above average for what should be expected for musicals.

It's all about the passion though. Technique can be improved upon, but first you need the raw talent and the passion, and she definitely has it.

Oh, I love to listen to fat guys singing the opera. You can imagine my sadness when Pavarotti, bless his soul, died.

You'd think after Paul Potts the judges wouldn't be surprised. I guess it just makes better television though to have ridiculously overdone facial expressions.
Beautiful voice.

Assuming she's telling the truth, and she's a 47-year-old unemployed woman who's never been kissed and lives alone with her cat Pebbles...
...and that's actually her voice...
...the fact that she sounds remarkably like her audition came straight off a Broadway cast recording is still pretty damn surprising.
And Paul Potts was no Pavarotti either. He had all the tone but none of the power.
Does that mean she'll win the whole thing? I don't know, but I think it means she's got a decent shot at it.
And yes, the judges' faces confused me. Don't they do the previous round of auditions that isn't recorded for the show? And thus they'd all seen her perform before and let her onto that round? They went all into that with the kid who won last year, how he'd failed to make it to the live show the previous time and was trying again. I guess they were probably just playing off the audience reaction.
She should do Back to Before from Ragtime, bwaaahahaha. Yeah, I'm going to musical hell.

This.
The fucking cynicism in this world destroys me sometimes.
She's not auditioning for a musical. She's on a reality TV show so she can share her talent. I doubt she's ever had a voice coach. She sang and she sang beautifully.

The gosh-darned intolerance in this world destroys me sometimes.
We're not judges on an internationally televised reality show. We're people expressing our innocuous, valid opinions on an Internet forum.

Either way for a apparently untrained amateur her performance was quite good. Also no they dont see their performances in advance. (I assume this is the first round) on american idol for example there are thousands of entrants. They have a seperate group of not so famous people who get to wade through that to select those that make it to the actual show at all. How do I know? I had a relative who once qualified for it, until they stupidly got caught drinking and doing weed in their hotel room two nights before the show anyway.

Irontoe eats stinky cheese and has bad foot hygiene problems. I'mma go get mah lynchin' rope and wez can has a hoedown!
Opera singers are awesome, though I don't think the woman in this clip possesses the voice strength and longevity to be compared to any, much less Pavarotti. Why exactly did this come up, anyway?

Because some people can't resist stirring shit and trying to get innocuous topics locked.

"You didn't make it through to the live shows, did you?"
From that, I got the impression that those judges did cover the round of auditions immediately previous, but I don't actually watch the show, so freely admit I don't actually have a clue. I know those judges wouldn't do all the auditions. That would be a time investment for people who don't get on TV. And even if they did, they see hundreds of people, making it easy to forget one from the next. Still, I wouldn't think she'd be that easy to forget, ha!
That woman's not operatic. One of the show's previous winners was. That woman wants to emulate Elaine Paige, who does musical theater, not opera, which is exactly what she did.

Some people can't resist feeding the trolls either. Pot meet Kettle.
As for the singer, she was great, loved the voice.

That's what I thought.
I'd definitely go see a production with her featured in it, but I've heard that theater is more ruthless than the film industry when it comes to having certain looks for certain roles. Chances are she'd never get a lead.

Well, one of the things Elaine Paige is famous for is Grizabella in Cats. Susan Boyle could definitely pull that off, ha!
The real problem with musical theater is a lot of the time it requires triple threats - dancing, acting, and singing. But there are always exceptions, things like Ragtime, A Little Night Music, and... well, pretty much any Sondheim stuff really. Most triple threats do have a strong suit anyway, but I can't exactly imagine her dancing.

.. Looky here..
They found something she recorded years ago for a local charity thing. And gods.. I keep listening to it over and over.. That voice. The Cynic in me says 'no way'. But gosh I want it to be her, because just -once- It would be nice to see the fairy-tale come true for someone who isn't 20-something and beautifull, and likely to throw it all away within 5 years due to heavy partying and reckless consumerism.
