View Full Version : moved from Tribute thread, re: compiling his work
Hello,
I have just been talking with the wife of Rick and she has a request.
She would like someone to contact her by phone and find out the best way to send her all the writings that Rick has made here.
However that now may not be necessary as you've already taken care of that for her in this Sticky. The efforts by Villayna and Sylennis may be all that is required here.
She has been on these forums now and is appreciative of what is being done here. I will let her know what is available here now and it may suffice. One of Ricks' wishes was to have his work published, or at least collated and put in some type of journal.
If not, is there someone that would not mind making contact with her, not right away but eventually in the event that she has further requests?
Please let me know, you can send me a PM and I'll set it up.

Actually, when it came down to what I could possibly do for Skafloc & family, the thought that came to me was compiling all of his writings (as well as writings inspired by his characters) and finding some specialty publishing place to put them in a book for his family. This goes a long way to you guys having already done much of that work, and maybe it should be a collaborative TNG gift, anyway.
I recommend everyone check through their own journals for references to Skafloc characters and link them here. If everyone checks their own journal it's not a big task for any single individual; additionally, sometimes people have used codenames so the author would recognize best if something is a mentioning of Skaf.
P.S. I'm rather capable and a quick-learner, so I had no fear of the task of formatting all of this in some sort of book layout, but at the same time I don't really have the technical applications (aside from Publisher) or expertise already, so if someone else works in publishing or wants to help I'm not so stubborn to deny you, but would still like some hand in the development.

ok, before everyone goes off in 100 different directions.
Self-publishing his work is a very doable thing that I have already looked into, and something I had planned on pursuing when I first found out. This compilation was the first step in a mile of red and very ugly tape and headaches.
I had hoped to be able to present this in an edited format, determine who the other writers were in order to get copyright permissions, and go through the contracting process with every person who contributed, even if only one sentence of theirs was included it would have to be done legally and correctly.
Since the cat is out of the bag, and I'm resisting the urge to just delete every reference to this that is public, please don't go into a frenzy about it.
If you want to help, I would suggest picking a character and/or storyline and doing a simple editing on it. For formatting, use simple bolds and italics only at this point, no colors or font size changes. Make one copy as a reader would see it, and one copy that explicitly blocks out which paragraphs are written by which author. This is very important.
Technically even reposting on the same website is a copyright infringement, so if you decide to do this, please do not repost your edited work. I know for a fact there are a few people who contributed to some of these stories would object to having their work included without a contracted permission from them.
Also, to pop any bubbles, things like this do not make money. They cost money. But you still have to go through the contracting foolishness. If on the very very very very very very very very small chance that it was made public and enough copies sold to surpass the costs, I would like to see that the money go to the charity listed in the obituary. This decision would have to rest with his wife, of course.

Would it be possible to get the publication discussion moved to the Something for Skafloc forum? I know a lot of people will want to help with this, me included.

Aw man I'm really bad at English and grammar and all the wordy stuff.
Maybe we could throw in art done for Skafloc as well?

What about all of the WoW references? Will those have to be edited out for copyright infringement?

oh definitely, Malorii :)
same thing with the written stuff though, do not post stuff other people did. Link to it all you want, just don't repost other people's stuff.

oops sorry, edited it to be clearer. You can post your own stuff as often as you like, I'm just trying to avoid people posting art from other people without their permission.

re: WoW stuff. That is something I haven't looked into yet. My instinct is that as long as no one is making money off of it and we're not advertising it as "World of Warcraft's official RP handbook" (exaggeration) that we shouldn't have too much of a hassle getting permission from Blizzard as long as we make it through the PR department before the legal department first.

Don't forget his blog. He wrote a few opinion pieces I really enjoy reading.
