View Full Version : [Feedback] Guild Representatives and Fairs

What do RP guilds around here think of the idea of sending an ambassador of their guild to size up or attempt to recruit new role-play characters? For example, if someone makes an introduction on the TNG or on the realm forum and identifies themselves as a role-player, the established guilds actively seek out contact with the new person, ICly, in-game. Trainers and quest-givers frequently expect player characters and know them by reputation, so the explanation for the knowledge of a new player on the field could be that participating guilds' intelligence networks were notified of a promising new face.

Additionally, or alternatively, a monthly Guild Fair event for each faction could be held, much like job fairs in the real world. I'm less certain of how that could be implemented, but it has the potential for a lot of fun and RP promotion.

Currently guild recruitment is passive. This could be a way of not only making guild expansion a more active process, but could help new role-players (or their secret alts) establish a network of contacts early on, thus easing that awkward stage most RPers encounter when they try to interject themselves into the lore of a new server.

Suggestions, feedback, and criticism encouraged.

I love this idea! I'd totally send one of my minio--, er, guildmates, to do this for Sanctuary.

Heeeeere Mokniiiiim.....

A guild fair is a good idea - perhaps monthly?

Could give all those new RPers a way to run the gamut of guilds and see what's for them.

I think it's a good idea that works for guilds that are recruiting IC. The job fair idea is a good one, although I'm not sure of the format. At least not for Horde. Perhaps Alliance can pull off sitting at a booth for 3 hours or somesuch, but it doesn't seem IC for a lot of Hordies.

Yeah, a "fair" would have to be at least semi-OOC for some guilds - I don't see the Cross or Grim going out and recruiting people, expecting instead that like-minded individuals would seek them out. Don't think it's a bad idea at all, as long as people don't take it too seriously.

Like Malethia said, it's probably not an idea that everyone will buy into, but I like the idea overall--very welcoming, especially to new folks.

I just thought of something similar that would keep more guilds IC while still demonstrating guild's RP and philosophies: Monthly debates.

That's genius.

I would get in on this.

As for recruitment, I tried it with VRE, setting up in Booty Bay to sign folks to the crew. It didn't work out very well. But maybe it would work with a joint effort.

Sort of like "The Gathering of the Guilds" event hosted by Vilmah - only for ALL of the guilds every month, we could post it up here and on the live forums, get as many RPers as we can.

Yes, people will grief it. /ignore and /report ftw.

Ugh. No. Nonono. Unless you can keep it small, those things are more of a headache than they're worth. And keeping it small defeats the entire purpose.

I think if certain guilds can accept a slight departure from "official" RP to participate in a fair, it would be fine.

The unofficial RP server in LoTRO had one of these around the time I was trying it out. It was completely IC and a great way to find potential guilds. It was how I found my guild there, and I think they held it once a month or so.

I think the way it functioned there could be modified to work with WoW.

The way they did it, is there is a (mostly) empty fairground north of Bree. Each kinship (guild) would take a tent at the fairgrounds and have an official kin representative or two on hand to answer anyone's questions. The fair ran for like 2-3 hours I think and was advertised a few days beforehand both on the official forums and occasional announcements in the city OOC channel.

I think it could be made to work for WoW. The SW park would work for Alliance, not sure where a good place for Horde would be...

The Barrens, probably. Most central location, unflagged, lots of room.

Well, a debate would have to be moderated, and everyone would have to agree to the moderation so there aren't twenty three people all trying to talk at the same time.

As for locations, Fray Island is pretty deserted and out of the way. Can you take raids into BRD? I've held guild meetings in Plugger's Bar.

Fray Island happens to be the headquarter location of at least three different guilds that I know of.

The reason's for that are clear. It is often quiet, low traffic, a podium and grandstands are present as well as a mess hall, among other things.

It would be good for a debate. Less so I think for a guild fair.

The location for the Dark Moon Faire in Mulgore might be ideal for the guild fair.

i'd hate to see any guild departing from rp for the sake of recruiting or participating in this. sometimes, when it comes to something cool that we want to partake in, we learn new ways to work the existing rp so we can play too. ((i am not trick or treating. i'm collecting candy to give back to the alliance after i've poisoned it!))

new rp'ers or ppl new to our server should be encouraged to make a post here, i think. keep the premise up of tng being a newspaper, a gazette. and someone could approach them and say "i saw your ad in the paper, i think we might be what you're looking for".

to me a fair could be pulled off. big or small, it'd be worth going to. but if ya start inviting cross faction rp, expect the consequences. pvp is not griefing. it's killing. keep it horde! and if it's truth that Horde members would not sit at a booth for hours with a sign up sheet and a quill like a human would, let's find a way that we would do it. have try-outs for Thrall's army. use fray island and have lil pvp challenges. ya want cross faction rp, bring some yucky dwarves and gnomes in to be the victims and we'll have recruits kick their butts in a very roleplay fashion, then we'll all fight over who can bribe the new recruit the most to see what guild he joins. that would feel Horde to me!

Horde =! corruption neccessarily

A 'fair' of sorts could be made to work. It'd be boisterous, violent, and with lots of random crap going down, but it'd still be a place to seek out new guilds. Some would wait in the shadows and pull prospectives aside, others might be forward.

It could be very interesting.

Fray Island would make a good place, there's room for multiple conversations at different spots.

D'oh! Should have thought of something like that.

A lot of good ideas being tossed around. But do any members of recruiting guilds wish to organize something like this?

I like that idea for Horde-side. It makes sense and won't really interfere with Horde guild RP, I suppose. Then again, I am not too familiar with Horde-side guild politics. But still, I like it!

Also, if the Alliance does decide to have a debate/inter-guild discussion/trial(maybe?) I know a perfect spot since the Park doesn't seem to fit with the atmosphere of those events. I am not sure how many people know about this place, but not too long ago I stumbled upon this place and thought "What the... when did this get here!?". There is a large and completely empty "Hall" in the topmost corner of the Dwarven District of Stormwind. I think it would be a great setting for those types of planned events. Whatcha think?

I love this idea. I've been playing here for a few months but the "rp community" seems rather cliquish and unapproachable. A social setting that isn't a "tavern night" is a good idea.

[EDIT] Maybe not make it so much of a "job fair" type atmosphere, but a craft fair where role players can gather and hawk their skills and wares without the impersonal middle man of the Auction House?

Citadel used to run Citadel Fairs in it's hayday. They were small, nicely handled, and a good deal of fun. It was mostly the craft show as was mentioned, as well as a bit of a scavenger hunt. So they do work.

Not sure what I would do. Running a bar isn't exactly well.. y'know. I suppose if such an event was held I could do what I used to and offer drinks to attendants.

I think it's a good idea. Switch it up and have it in different cities, and add some kind of raffle and other event to it. May even pull some of the sleeper rpers in.

^^Agree.

And this would be good for the people, (like me and a couple of others that I know) that are affiliated with a guild that is not centered on rp, but play characters who do heavily rp and are always in character. We could mix and mingle with other rp'ers who might otherwise exclude us because of a guild tag.

To get off the ground it needs someone to step up and schedule it.

I'll step up and take an organizing role in getting this off the ground.
I'll make a group where we can discuss the details and make a plan

Edit:
Ok -- I created a group called the TN Community Fair (http://wow-tng.org/group.php?groupid=49). That's just a working name, we can come up with a more clever name later. If you're interested in helping organize, please join the group so we can discuss the logistics.

Athin scores some "Izrailite" rep for both stepping up and utilizing the Social Group feature to do so. Good luck in this endeavor. :)
